SideWalk Writes the Future Each week, a team of highly trained, friendly, and fashionable SideWalk Chalkers caravan to one of several Charleston County public schools and spend forty-five minute sessions in small group settings with students, pens touching paper, imaginations in bloom, writing, writing, writing. 
What do they write?
Everything. Poetry. Short Stories. Persuasive Speeches. Letters to the President. Rushdie said, “Language is courage; the ability to conceive a thought, to speak it, and by doing so, make it real.” We believe it. As our youth learn to express themselves through language and the written word, confidence, grades, and feelings of self-worth increase. Future doors are opened in the workplace. Ideas are shared and explored. A semester of SideWalk Writes the Future culminates in each class contributing pieces of their writing to a professionally published book, complete with author bios, photos, and art. Every student will receive a copy. Additional copies may be purchased in our store, or at one of several fine peninsula booksellers. Visual Art Workshops Upon request, SideWalk also offers workshops in painting, photography, bookmaking, dance, and just about any other artistic medium you can imagine. All workshops are led by professionals in the field, and can be tailored to meet the needs of the school. |
